Flyball is a fast-paced sport for dogs that love to run, jump and fetch tennis balls! Teams of four dogs compete against each other in a relay race. Each dog on the team runs down a lane of four jumps, hits a box to release a tennis ball, catches it, then turns around and runs back over the jumps… the fastest team wins! Tournaments are held all over Central Texas most months of the year.
If you have a tennis ball addict, or one who loves to run and jump (and needs an outlet for all that energy), flyball may be the sport for you!
How and when can I get started?
Flyball practices are ongoing, every Sunday morning, so you can get started straight away! Students and dogs new to the sport sign up for a six week introductory series of half-hour private/semi-private lessons that meet for a half hour before regular practice starts. After the half-hour, new students are invited to stay and participate in the regular practice with their dog. This format combines intensive instruction with few distractions along with active participation in weekly practices, so you and your dog can see if the club will be a good fit.
What do I need to know before starting?
Your dog needs to be at least 12 months old and have completed a basic obedience class. A good recall is extremely helpful, but not required. Your dog also needs to be comfortable around people and other dogs, as much of the training is done off-leash. Your dog should also be comfortable being crated, or be in the process of crate training, as dogs are crated some during practice to allow their handlers to assist other club members.
