Treibball
Do you have a herding breed who needs a job? Or do you have a dog who loves to chase things? Would you love to try herding with your dog, but don’t have access to sheep? Consider trying the suburban herding sport of Treibball (“TRY-ball”)!
What is Treibball?
Treibball is a brand new dog sport that mimics the sport of herding, but instead of herding sheep into a pen, the dog drives large exercise balls into a goal. The sport is new enough to the United States that it doesn’t have formal rules for competition yet. In Europe, where the sport has been played for several years, Treibball is organized into several levels:
- At the beginning level, dogs drive one ball into a large goal behind the net. The dog is timed, and the dog who completes the task the fastest, wins.
- In the middle level, dogs drive up to eight balls into the goal.
- In the upper level, the judge can choose the order the balls are driven into the goal.
What do we learn in class?
Introduction to Treibball focuses on teaching you the skills needed to have your dog drive one ball into a goal. You and your dog will learn:
- the out run (sending your dog away from you to a spot behind the ball)
- the push (pushing the ball under control, in a straight line back towards the handler when directed)
- stay (your dog needs to stay until sent on an out run, and hold a stay behind the ball until directed to push it)
What do we need to know before starting class?
No herding experience necessary! A previous basic obedience class is recommended. Your dog needs to be able to focus on you in a class setting and have a good recall, as we will be working portions of the class off-leash. Dogs should be friendly towards people and other dogs.
How long is the class and what does it cost?
The class is eight weeks long and costs $175.
When is the next class and how do I register?
