Rally Obedience

Halt Walk Around DogInterested in refining your on leash manners in a fun and exciting way?  Consider training in Rally Obedience!  Rally is a new dog sport that is quickly gaining in popularity due to its fun and informal structure.

What is Rally Obedience?

Rally-O is a much more informal, relaxed version of competition obedience that focuses on skills useful in every day life with dogs.  You and your dog follow a set course of numbered stations at your own pace — each station has a skill that you must complete before moving on to the next one.  Examples of stations are: down stay while you walk around your dog, heeling at fast or slow pace, heel to a sit, etc.  There are three levels of competition (Novice, Advanced and Excellent) and titles are awarded at each level.

Who can/should learn Rally?

If you are tired of drilling basic obedience and want a fun way to practice and improve your on and off-leash skills, try Rally!  Rally is an excellent way to practice basic obedience skills, work towards passing your CGC, or test the competition waters, all while having fun and playing games with your dog.  All dogs, purebred or mixed breed, can train and compete in AKC Rally Obedience.

When is the next class, what does it cover, and how much does it cost?

New Rally classes begin every few months.  Call or email Elizabeth to express your interest and get put on the waiting list.  Using reward-based training, you will learn how to heel, and all the stations that can be included in a Novice Rally course.   The cost for the eight week class is $175.

Rally Drop-Ins

We are now also offering Rally Drop-In classes! Drop-ins are ongoing practices for students who have already taken an introductory class, or who already know all the Novice level signs. Each class will offer two full courses and as many mini-courses as we can run in an hour. Feedback, practice judges, and coaching are provided. Class is every Wednesday night, from 8-9pm and costs $15. You must RSVP to Elizabeth or Catherine before attending.

What should we know before signing up?

You and your dog should have completed a basic obedience class so I know you have basic control over your dog around other dogs (if you have not taken a class, please call to discuss your prior obedience experience to determine if the class is suitable for you).  You do not need to know how to heel, or have any formal (competition) obedience training.  Although the class is geared towards preparing you for competition, it is open to anyone who would like to attend (so please don’t feel you have to want to compete — you can just come to train and have fun with your dog  if you want!
